ABOUT US
Hi, I'm Lisa. I'm the owner of Slurpies Straws. I'm living in Lower Hutt with my husband and love a good reusable product. When Slurpies Straws came up for sale in late 2023, I knew this was a product I could really get behind. I saw just how much plastic waste I was creating and knew I needed to make a real change, to really follow my life motto to 'leave a legacy'. Slurpies Straws is just that, making the world a better place, one slurp at a time.
With our reusable, eco-friendly stainless steel straws; we can slurp away knowing we are making a difference to the environment and also slurp away fashionably.
Slurpies Straws was started after really looking at the plastic we consume daily.
After some eye-opening research and finding out actually how bad plastic straws are we decided to hit the ground running and now here a few years in, here we are and continue to be.
I know some of you are asking 'are plastic straws that bad?' 'I thought all plastic is recyclable?'
The majority of straws are made from polypropylene plastic.
Polypropylene plastic is marked with a number 5, so yes, it is recyclable. Straws, however, are often too small and fall through the conveyor belts and get lost in the sorting process of recycling.
They drop through sorting screens and mix with other materials contaminating recycling loads.
Instead, plastic straws often end up in our landfills and don’t decompose or biodegrade.
There they stay for hundreds of years, or worse, end up in our oceans. Plastic in oceans float around as small pieces (called microplastics) that can poison animals, hurt the environment and is even found in our seafood.
The better alternative for our environment is to make and buy products that last a long time and don’t pollute our world. So do your bit and rock your stylish and eco-friendly Slurpies Straw.
